With the Ratchet and Clank remake approaching store shelves very soon, Insomniac has recently put out some more gameplay footage. And it’s clear that this remake is changing some things up, as some planets are completely different from their originals while some are similar in some ways. We wanted to show that to you first hand with a head to head comparison between the original PS2 version of the left, and the new remake on the right. Let’s begin.

Ratchet and Clank Novalis

Here we have Planet Novalis, the first main Planet of the game. There’s a lot more detail shown in the remake with various trees and buildings being added. Along with fire, projectiles are raining from the sky to increase the feeling that invasion is going on. And this extends to the waterfall path which looks beautiful, to say the least.

It’s the beginning of the game as you truly imagined it!

Another interesting change to this planet is saving the mayor. In the original game, he was somewhat scared of Ratchet and Clank thinking they were going to kill him and offered an infobot to Metropolis. However, in the remake, he comes out and thanks the two for their services right away and says the reason they attacked him was for the shady business of his nephew Skid McMarx. This revealed a connection between these two characters that was not present in the original title. He gives you the infobot from Planet Aridia instead of The Plumber in this level. In the original Playstation 2 game, the video showed Skid and his agent crash on the planet. In the remake, Skid has been working his sports shack where the blarg trick him into signing a contract for an illegal Hyrdodisplacer. This results in Skid getting into trouble.

Speaking of Aridia we did a video head to head comparison between the two. Click the video down below to see the two in action!

Ratchet and Clank
A whole new section of gameplay not found in the original release. Providing fans with new experiences with this title.

The final planet from the new footage was of Planet Kerwan, which holds Metropolis. Out of all the planets we’ve seen as of now, this without question is the most changed one. At the beginning of the footage, Ratchet is piloting a gunship trying to help the galactic rangers who are under attack by Drek’s forces. The first piloting level in the original game wasn’t until Pokitaru, which is much later in the game. The duo is forced into ground combat afterwards. And, while the level design is similar to the original, this planet, in particular, feels the most changed out of the three shown as they only share the same layout. Enemy placement, box placement and where walls are, are not similar and might look familiar to fans at first.

Ratchet and Clank Metropolis
Metropolis may share the same level design. But this code of paint might make fans question if it the same for a bit.

While some parts are similar, other parts show the game to be quite different than the original. This gives new players, who have never played a Ratchet and Clank game, a great starting point for the series.  It also gives veterans enough of a reason to go through their first adventure again with all of the changes made.

Ratchet and Clank blast off on April 12th in USA and April 20th in most of Europe.
