Grab your lassos and tie your wenches to the tracks because the Red Dead Redemption 2 hype train has officially left the station, with the release of its first trailer earlier this morning.

A trailer’s job is to reveal enough information to drum up excitement, but not enough to give away important information. The Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer does a great job of showing just enough to remind fans of just why they enjoyed the original.

The ambiance of the Red Dead’s wild west, the characters that live in it, and the places they visit are what set Redemption apart from similar games in the genre. The trailer strums our nostalgic strings, panning through woodlands, towns, and ranches that  are seemingly indistinguishable from the original Red Dead Redemption.

It’s safe to assume the setting and time period will be the same, not only based upon the similarities in the trailer, but given that the wild west is a very distinct period in time and is central to the series theme (obviously). While the trailer doesn’t contain any leads as to the exact identity of the main character, it did confirm certain plot points.

The trailer peaks with a grizzled man conveying a foreboding warning, “When the time comes, you gotta run and don’t look back. This is over.” The voice-over is accompanied by the ominous scenes of  buzzards picking at corpses and a burning field, followed by the riders shown in the teaser poster seemingly ignoring the man’s warning.

It’s safe to assume that the main character of the game is the leader of the gang of riders, based on the predominant nature they assume on both the teaser poster and end of the trailer. Gangs have always been an interesting aspect of the Red Dead world, with the plot point of the original revolving around Marston’s past involvement with Dutch’s Old Gang.

The possibilities of gangs open a lot of features for the upcoming sequel, for singleplayer and multiplayer alike, and is in good hands considering Rockstars past work on GTA Online. The fantasy of forming your own version of Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch just might become a reality when Red Dead Redemption 2 releases next may, and we couldn’t be more excited.
