Remnant 2 is a sequel to Remnant: From The Ashes, which occurs in the same world. While Remnant 2 has improved over the original, players might worry that they will miss important story details. It’s never fun to play a game and not know what is going on. Familiar faces feel foreign, and you don’t understand the mechanics. Previously referenced events should feel obvious, but you have no idea what is happening. It can be a horrible experience if you spoil the story for yourself without knowing anything. Should you play the original first before Remnant 2, or is it okay to dive in without playing the first game?

While Remnant: From The Ashes would be a good start, it’s not mandatory. While it will help you to settle in, playing the original game doesn’t give you any required information. Remnant 2 takes place in the same world but doesn’t rely on the previous game’s story. You might take time to adjust to a new Souls-like game, but you will pick up the concepts quickly.

Think of it like playing Dark Souls 3 without ever touching the franchise. Other players can recognize NPCs or locations from previous games and feel right at home. But if that was your first Dark Souls game, the only problem is getting used to combat. The stories are separate even if they take place within the same world. Any improvements or changes would be lost on you, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the game.

Play The Original Game If You Have Time

That’s not to say Remnant: From The Ashes is a bad game. If you have the time, it’s worth checking it out and giving it a go. It’s likely cheaper than Remnant 2 and will provide a similar experience. If you enjoy what you see, then you will like Remnant 2. If you don’t like the game, you spend significantly less to determine whether a game is right for you. While Remnant 2 will likely fix some of the issues you have with Remnant: From The Ashes, it won’t change too much.

Remnant 2 Review: Double or Nothing

If you are already a fan of the Souls-like genre, then you will enjoy Remnant 2 and what it offers. Even if you have never picked up the first game, you already know what to expect. But if you’re on a budget, playing the original will help cut down on costs while giving you a similar experience. When you start Remnant 2, you will be better prepared than most players and jump in immediately. For those strapped for time and don’t have the money to buy two games, it’s better to go with Remnant 2.

Start with Remnant 2 Right Away If You Want

There has never been a rule saying you can’t play games out of order. Playing Remnant 2 first won’t spoil your experience because you aren’t familiar with the world. It’s great if you have played the first game but won’t miss out on anything important. The plot from the first game doesn’t affect Remnant 2; you play as a different character.

Furthermore, the hub, Ward 13, features a bunch of NPCs that are basically there to fill in the gaps between games. So, if you have never touched the original, talk to everybody, and they will catch you up.

Even if you have never touched a Souls-like game in your life, that doesn’t mean you won’t be ready. If you are unsure if you will like Remnant 2, pick up the original game first. That will help you see if Remnant 2 is right for you.
