Releasing mere months after Final Fantasy VII, Square’s (now Square Enix) SaGa Frontier had some tough boots to fill, and whilst it didn’t make the same impact in the west SaGa Frontier was still a pretty great RPG. Thankfully, for those that may have missed out at the time, the title is getting a remaster.

The remaster will launch in the summer of 2021 for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, IOS, Android, and PC via Steam.

SaGa Frontier is a classic turn-based JRPG with 2D characters straight from the JRPG days of old, it’s a style that many people still yearn for. Have a look at the announcement trailer for yourselves and let the nostalgia flow:

The thing that makes SaGa Frontier that little bit different is the story. At the start, players can choose to take control of one of 7 different characters, each with their own separate storyline and ending. The choices in each playthrough will affect things in what’s called the free-form scenario system. Playing as all the characters and seeing how the stories connect is definitely a joy, and for the remaster, things are taken up a notch. This time around, finishing the game with all 7 characters will unlock a brand new character, Fuse, complete with a new story.

Fuse won’t be the only addition to the base SaGa Frontier game though, as some events that were cut from the original release have been restored here allowing for a fuller experience for one of the characters.

As this is a Square Enix remaster, the usual quality of life improvements are present. Obviously, everything looks much better on our HD TVs with higher quality characters, backgrounds, and text we can actually read. The usual things such as 2X speed have also been added. With quite some time until the release, we are bound to see more on the game in the coming months, and we’ll be sure to bring you more when it comes in. In the meantime, let me know in the comments if you’re excited about SaGa Frontier, and be sure to let me know your thoughts on the original, if you played it.
