Some franchises are just for fans, but movies can catch on with critics over time, too. Saw X has received positive reviews, enough so to earn it the first Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes for the franchise. The tenth installment is set to be the most emotional and arguably the goriest, most brutal movie yet.
Saw X Spills Blood and Fresh Tomatoes Rather Than Rotten Ones for Franchise First
As of writing, as there is no Critics Consensus on the dedicated page for the movie, it holds 84% from 37 reviews. Those who enjoyed the film applauded it for finding its way back to its roots with John Kramer (Tobin Bell) and Amanda (Shawnee Smith) at the lead, more creative traps, and a focused, emotional story.
The 84% Saw X received on Rotten Tomatoes towers over every installment. From descending order, the scores below the tenth film go as follows: Saw (50%), Saw VI (39%), Spiral (37%) and Saw II (37%), Jigsaw (32%), Saw III (30%), Saw IV (18%), Saw V (13%), Saw: The Final Chapter (9%).
Saw X looks to change the long history of fan scores being on the different spectrum of critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes. The review aggregator has had a Fresh rating for audiences for Saw, Saw III, Saw IV, Jigsaw, and 2021’s Spiral. Even the fan favorites, like the first film, received poor scores at the time from film critics.
The film was directed by Kevin Greutert (Saw VI and The Final Chapter). It kept things in-house with other franchise veterans, with writers Pete Goldfinger (Jigsaw and Spiral) and Josh Stolberg (Jigsaw and Spiral). Alongside its two leads returning to the franchise, it stars Synnøve Macody Lund (Ragnarok), Steven Brand (Teen Wolf), Octavio Hinojosa (How to Survive Being Single), and Paulette Hernandez (Crown of Tears).
Saw X will be released in theaters on September 29.
