Sony has decided to shut down the multiplayer servers for Killzone: Mercenary. The PlayStation Vita shooter had a dedicated community that is saddened by the shutdown.

Killzone: Mercenary hit the PlayStation Vita in 2013, and was lauded for its ability to convert the first-person shooter gameplay of Killzone to a portable device. Instead of playing as an ISA soldier, your character is a mercenary that plays both sides of the conflict.

Killzone: Mercenary

The conundrum, in this case, is the lack of warning from Sony regarding shutting down the game’s servers. They typically give a 90 days notice before shutting down the servers for most games.

While small, the Killzone: Mercenary community seems downhearted at the loss of the game’s multiplayer. The Vita subreddit has a growing number of comments discussing the shutdown and the lack of notice by Sony.

Sony has had issues regarding shutting down game servers before. Back in 2018, Sony shut down the servers for multiplayer darling Warhawk on the PlayStation 3 with only a one-month notice, even though the game’s packaging stated that any retiring of online services would come with a 90-day notice.

Other PlayStation titles that have had their servers shut down include Warhawk, PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale and SingStar.

Killzone: Mercenary Community Saddened at Server Shutdown

Even though it is probably a small contingent of players still enjoying the multiplayer for this Vita shooter, it is upsetting to see Sony shutdown another multiplayer game. One would assume that it is not a lot of manpower necessary to run the servers for the game, and the lack of a simple notice does more harm than good.

Hopefully, Sony addresses the matter and at the very least extends the multiplayer servers back a month for players. If not, this continues to set a precedent for Sony not caring for its back catalog of multiplayer games.
