Remember those late nights playing DnD with your friends? The thrill of a brand new adventure right around the corner; this thrill might still be very recent if you still engage in DnD games (as many of us do). Although a Dungeons and Dragons campaign are typically focused on a group of heroes working together to defeat an evil much greater than a single player ever could, sometimes you just wanted to feel like a complete badass. Sorcery! gives you that thrill and more as it puts the hero against the world of nostalgia in a journey of epic proportions. You might not be able to name your hero or have him or her look, however, you like but you can choose how to play your hero, how to play your story, and ultimately how to finish your adventure. If you’re a glutton for adventure you’re about to get full real fast.
Sorcery! Parts 1 and 2’s gameplay mechanics can either be incredibly simple or require intense studying depending on how you wish to play the game. Do you want to grab your sword and take on every problem you come across the head on? You can do that. Maybe you want to be cautious when going into battle and cast some spells before taking the offensive route? That is also doable. Sorcery leaves it for you to decide if you want to use magic or swords (or both) but if you’re planning on going the magic route be sure to give your spell book a good look before you start adventuring. Spells in the game work by combining “constellations” to form powerful magics (you just combine three letters) but the game doesn’t tell you what the best spell for the situation is; the game simply gives you letters you can use and lets you decide for yourself. It’s an incredibly realistic way to play a spell caster since you’re not given the infinite amount of time to go through your spells and decide what to play like you’re given in most games (it’s pretty spectacular). The amount of spells you can cast are pretty amazing ranging from defensive, offensive, and some very silly ones; buy a flute as soon as you can, just trust me on this one.
It probably seems like I’m giving a lot of credit and a strong preference to going full magic when playing the game but that’s not to say you can’t go full commando and plow creatures down with just your sword, it’s just an incredibly limiting path. The game is called Sorcery so completely ignoring the magic aspect of the game would take away from what this game has to offer, but by all means, I encourage a no magic playthrough if that’s how you wish to play the game. I just want to reiterate that playing this game without accessing your magic repertoire would be like getting chili and only eating the beans (who does that?).
Sorcery! does a great job in adding replayability both on the spot and once you’re done with the whole thing since you have the ability to rewind your choices; whether you’re unhappy about being ambushed by a horde of goblins, or if you made a mistake by not buying enough food in the previous village, or if you really wanted the sword the shop owner had a few towns back, or… I think you get the point. You can rewind these choices you’ve made but it’s always a lot more fun when you stick to your guns and try to find a way out. The night and day system in the game will keep you on your toes when exploring areas at night since a night without rest might lead to your death a few moments later. You’ll want to explore the world you’ve been placed in; there is a story and a quest you have to complete but the fact that the game makes you get lost in its world because you want to learn more about it is a good thing. There will be some light reading so if reading isn’t your thing you might have some trouble with the game but trust me it’s worth the read.

Let the world of Sorcery! Parts 1 and 2 take you by the hand and show the various places, creatures, and spells that it has in store. If you’ve played similar games in the past this will be right up your alley; If Dungeons and Dragons have never been something you’ve been interested in this might make you reconsider that. The game is available for you to purchase for yourself so be sure to give it a try. Now go on and have a great adventure.
- Gameplay: Fun interesting gameplay. Try out as many spells as you can.
- Graphics: It’s clear that the graphics aren’t the focus of the game, but what they give us works.
- Sound: The soundtrack is enough to keep you playing. You’re a silent protagonist which means the game relies on the score to keep players immersed.
- Presentation: The maps are incredibly well designed. Character design is what you’d expect from a fantasy adventure game but it never makes you feel like you don’t want to keep going.
