Do you ever dream of becoming a janitor? Of course not. At least not on purpose. And when you do dream of it, you probably wake up feeling grateful it was only a dream. But for a select chosen few, the fine art of dusting , sweeping and washing is more than a mere day job – it is a high-score-seeking action-packed ride full of thrills and danger. I am speaking, naturally, of Dustforce. Developed by Hitbox Team and released in 2012, the objective in Dustforce is to wipe away all the debris from each level in one long combo. Now that you’ve been provided with the basic job description, it’s time to clean up.

Each of the four selectable characters share the same moves and controls, but each has slightly different stats. This Dustforce run, much like the game itself, is fairly straightforward. All that is required to finish a stage is the right timing. The result is an easy-to-learn but difficult-to-master platformer that will leave you wondering when on Earth spring cleaning became so much fun. The one time-saving trick used throughout the run is quitting a stage right at the finish, before the ending tallies are made. Naturally, this clips a few seconds off the top, although it sacrifices the cool character poses, especially Dustman’s (the blue guy’s) tip of the hat.

If there’s one thing Dustforce proves once and for all, it is that nothing is safe from the over-glorification of video games, and that driving players to replay the same levels over and over to the point of absolute perfection is as easy as waving a number in their faces.
