Even though it missed yesterday’s Indie World Showcase, developer MossMouth announced (via Gematsu) today that challenging platformer-slash-dungeon-spelunking titles, Spelunky and Spelunky 2, are coming to Nintendo Switch this August 26. Both Spelunky titles will be released digitally through Nintendo eShop for $9.99 and $19.99 respectively. The first game will support only local multiplayer up to four players. While you and three of your friends will be able to help (or hinder) each other online and locally in Spelunky 2. The Switch ports were first announced back in December last year.

Spelunky was first released in 2008 by developer Derek Yu. Becoming an instant hit, it later got remade for most major consoles throughout 2012-2014 with cooperative and competitive four-player modes. Playing as an unnamed adventurer only known as the Spelunker, your goal in this game is to explore randomly generated tunnels to gather as much treasure as possible while avoiding traps and enemies.

The sequel then launched for PS4 and PC in September 2020, where you play as his daughter, Ana, that went to the Moon (yes, that Moon) to find her missing parents. Spelunky 2 introduces liquid physics, rideable mounts, as well as cross-play support to the series. Yu also added more focus to the plot and background stories by creating in-game journals and several NPCs you can interact with while chilling out in the Base Camp.

Despite its relatively simple premise and gameplay, thanks to its randomly generated dungeons, rogue-lite elements, charming presentation, and multiplayer modes, the game still holds up well in 2021. Especially when people keep looking for more new games to pass their time while being cooped inside their houses during these trying times. With this release, I hope more people can enjoy spelunking-goodness once both Spelunky games drop onto the Nintendo Switch eShop. Do you agree?
