[SPOILER ALERT to Thor 8#/Female Thor’s Identity. You’ve been warned]
Ever since her first appearance in October, many people questioned female Thor’s identity. Until now the alter ego of the new hero who holds the mighty Mjolnir is indeed mysterious. Many people thought that it’s Earth X’s Thor who was turned to a woman as a result of Odin’s cursed. It’s not impossible, considering in what happened during Secret Wars event. Or is she Enchantress? Thor’s nemesis who also happens to have blonde hair. What about Lady Sif? or Thor’s sister, Angela?
Well, we can stop speculating now, because she has opened her mask. Her true identity has been revealed on this week’s Thor 8#, written by Jason Aaron, and illustrated by Russell Dauterman. This case is similar with Red Hulk’s identity, where it was shown that his alter ego is the person close to Hulk (General “Thunderbolt” Ross). Female Thor’s identity is also close, and even share a personal bond with Thor Odinson. Can you guess who she is? (final hint: she’s in both Thor’s MCU movies)
As it turns out, it is Jane Foster. Thor’s former girlfriend who happens to be battling breast cancer. She’s also made famous by Natalie Portman, who played the character in Thor, and Thor: The Dark World.
In an interview by The New York Times blog, Jason Aaron had this to say on Jane Foster,
Jane Foster has been part of the Thor comics and the Thor mythology from almost the very beginning… The very act of picking up this hammer, of becoming Thor, is killing her. Where we go from here is the real story.”
Thor has been deemed unworthy to hold Mjolnir ever since the event of Original Sin. That’s when Jane Foster comes in to replace Thor as the new wielder of the hammer.
Jason Aaron also said that this storyline has managed to attract female readers to read the comics.
Most of the new readers seem to be women and young girls, which is great. You’re seeing more and more comics that appeal to that audience. Usually when I say I write comics for a living, I kind of get blank stares. Now, when I say I write Thor, they say, ‘you’re the lady Thor guy?’ yup, that’s me.”
