Fans became aware of a live-action Star Wars series, executive produced by Jon Favreau, quite some time ago. But the details surrounding the project were sketchy. But all of that uncertainty faded away recently as Favreau took to Instagram with a major update. This included a plot summary of the series and its title: Star Wars: The Mandalorian.
This obviously confirms the focus on a Mandalorian – a major part of the Star Wars mythos. The warrior race – and Boba Fett in particular – got plenty of attention in the old expanded universe. The Mandalorian race appeared in a number of books and comics, establishing more about them as they continued to thrive in the lore. But this series promises to take a look at an angle that the films never really went into – those outside of the Fett line. It also takes place in a time period not really played with in the films or cartoons, to date – between the original and new trilogies.
That’s not all we have, however. There’s also the matter of who’ll be behind the camera. Jon Favreau is slated to write the series. It also features Dave Filoni as the director of the first episode for certain. Future episode directors include Deborah Chow, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Taika Waititi. Given that spread of directors, it seems like the series is aiming to be a bit more on the fun side. Especially with Thor: Ragnarok‘s Waititi in the director’s chair. And to make matters even more interesting, the first image from the production is also making its rounds on the internet.
There’s no concrete information on casting yet. It’s been suggested that Pedro Pascal was looked at for the lead role, but this has yet to be confirmed. More information is likely on the way soon. For now, we know that Star Wars: The Mandalorian premieres on Disney’s streaming service in 2019.
