Studio Trigger, the team behind shows like Gurren Lagann and Kill La Kill, will air their newest work, Space Patrol Luluco, in April this year. As the name suggests, the series takes viewers beyond Earth to a space colony where humans and aliens co-exist. Luluco is an “average” middle school girl who happens to meet a mysterious boy named AΩ Nova. The meeting changes Luluco’s life forever.

It all sounds like another dime-a-dozen kiddie romance comedy, and the art style of the promotional image does nothing but reinforce the assumption of the stereotype. Studio Trigger has brought in some notable actors for the cast, like Mao Ichimichi as Luluco, Junya Enoki as AΩ Nova, and Mitsuo Iwata as Luluco’s father. And given the studio’s penchant for turning convention on its head, Space Patrol Luluco could easily end up going in a direction no one expects. Or it might flop, like Ninja Slayer.

Crunchyroll will stream the series beginning April 1, 2016, at 10:30 p.m. JST (that’s 8:30 a.m. EST on April 1). The airing is happening as a part of Ultra Super Anime Time’s fourth season, a 30-minute block of anime shorts. It’s unclear if this means SPL will only be previewed, or if the series is, in fact, a set of short animations rather than full-length episodes. Anime fans will have to see this one for themselves to find out what it’s all about.
