  • What Is in Store for Season 2 of Mortal Kombat 1 After Takeda
  • The Waning Interest of the Hardcore Fanbase of Mortal Kombat 1

Takeda Takahashi just got a gameplay trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 that shows off his interactions with the cast, special moves, and of course, a brutal fatality. The upcoming fighter comes wielding bladed chains, explosive shurikens, land mines, and a whole lot of style. Takeda is the first fighter for season 2 of Mortal Kombat 1, but he and other upcoming characters aren’t all, as some big changes are planned for pretty much every facet of the game. Although the game has been popular, there are ways in which the community is showing a lack of interest.

Ed Boon took to X (Formerly Twitter) where he outlined some of the changes that fans can expect in season 2 of Mortal Kombat 1. First and foremost, the release date of Takeda was confirmed to be July 23, 2024, but fans who make it to the Sony-owned Evo tournament in Vegas will be able to get their hands on Takeda on July 19.

What Is in Store for Season 2 of Mortal Kombat 1 After Takeda

With the start of season 2 of Mortal Kombat 1, the Takeda update will also bring bug fixes and balance changes. These include some major buffs to Nitara, new combo routes for Li Meri, a new portal boot kick for Quan Chi, and an improved ex-teleport for Scorpion. Buffs aren’t limited to base characters alone, as cameo fighters like Frost, Sektor, Cyrax, and Goro will also get stronger with season 2. Finally, uppercut jump cancels are getting improved across the board. More detailed patch notes will be released when Takeda joins the Mortal Kombat 1 cast.

Ed Boon turned it to the players to know what they want for the future of Mortal Kombat 1 through a small survey. He expected fans to demand more Ambush Moves, but instead, the fans said that the thing they want most is just more cameos. Boon confirmed that this makes new cameos the biggest priority, and we can expect to see more in the near future. Other major additions with season 2 of Mortal Kombat 1 will include a continuing story, more fighters, new features, and more. This will improve the offline aspect of the game and improve the single-player experience as well.

The Waning Interest of the Hardcore Fanbase of Mortal Kombat 1

The reason for this addition is a lack of consistency from the hardcore players. Even though in terms of sales, Mortal Kombat 1 continues to be one of the top 20 best-selling games, the Evo competitor numbers paint a much darker picture of what the community actually thinks. While games like Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8 have much lower total sales than Mortal Kombat 1, both have over 4-5 thousand competitors in Evo 2024. Meanwhile MK1, even with its tremendous sales, has a little over 600 people competing in one of the largest fighting game tournaments in the world.

All the changes coming with season 2 might be a sign of what NetherRealm Studios has planned for the future of Mortal Kombat 1. By listening to the community, and creating interest for the hardcore fans, MK1 can regain the lost interest in the game’s competitive scene.

Takeda Takahashi will be the first character for season 2 of Mortal Kombat 1 which will come out on July 23, 2024. Anyone showing up for Evo 2024 can get some early hands-on time on Takeda on July 19.
