Tetsuya Nomura Sees Kingdom Hearts 4 and Kingdom Hearts Missing Link as Reboots: They’re “Being Made With a Stronger Focus on Being New Titles Rather Than Sequels.”

Simple and clean

No one can deny that Kingdom Hearts as a whole has some of the most convoluted plots to follow. You’ll always hear people say that is a deterrent to get into the series, but once you get past some of its shenanigans, you’re in for a treat. That being said, it seems Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura is aware of this and is planning Kingdom Hearts 4 to be a reset or reboot of sorts for the franchise. In a way, this will be a terrific approach to get new players onboard while probably confusing diehard fans more.

In a recent interview with Japanese magazine Young Jump, Tetsuya Nomura spoke with the staff about Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth and Kingdom Hearts. While most focused on Rebirth, Nomura mentioned a few interesting things regarding Kingdom Hearts 4, mainly how we should see it as a reboot of sorts for the franchise.

This time, both “Kingdom Hearts Missing Link” and “Kingdom Hearts IV” are being made with a stronger focus on being new titles rather than sequels.

Furthermore, Nomura mentions in the interview that he’s thinking about retiring, which also means that Kingdom Hearts will finally reach its end. While it is wild to believe that Kingdom Hearts might finally reach its end, it makes a lot of sense. After so many mainline games and a few spin-offs, getting into it is a challenge on its own. Wrapping it with Kingdom Hearts 4 or at least laying the groundwork with this reboot would be a great idea and something I know many will be on board for.

Nomura says in an interview with Young Jump that he envisions Kingdom Hearts IV and Missing Link as new titles to the series rather than just sequels.

After KH3 ended, he wanted to kind of reset the story, so they even hired new writers and changed the logo to make it easier… pic.twitter.com/h6CKqr8YNz

Still, we’ll have to wait and see what Nomura and the team have in store for us. At the time of writing, there isn’t a release date for Kingdom Hearts 4, and we’re all still holding on to that trailer we saw two years ago. Regardless of what comes, many of us just want to know where Sora is heading now and which Disney characters will join the colorful and convoluted roster of this iconic franchise.
