Texas Doctor Performs Surgery on Patient but ‘Never Told Her Entire Stomach Was Removed Without Proper Informed Consent’

She probably needs that…

Typically, during surgeries, surgeons inform their patients in detail about the procedures, explaining what is being removed or altered. However, one Texas doctor did a gastric bypass surgery on a patient but bizarrely didn’t tell her that he removed her entire stomach pouch. The things that led to this discovery were a series of “stomach issues, dumping syndrome, constant fatigue, and shaky episodes after meals.” Eventually, she visited a different GI doctor to have an endoscopy done. Stunned, the doctor literally said, “It looks like your stomach was completely removed.” Needless to say, the patient and her family were shocked.

Allegedly, the daughter of the patient says that the stomach removal was “done without proper informed consent.” She continues, asking Reddit whether she should take action against the bariatric surgeon who performed the surgery without disclosing important details. “Does this sound like something she could potentially take legal action for?” she anxiously asks Reddit. Her post’s top comment reads, “As a surgeon who did a TON of bariatrics in training, I would 100% not take the GI doc at their word.”

Another user added in agreement, “[I] Agree that the endoscopy isn’t sufficient to say that there was any issues with her prior surgery.” While a few argued as to whether this whole situation is just doctors throwing each other under the bus, many users believe that “Something is not adding up here.” Another person chimed in, saying, “This sounds insane to me as a medical professional that someone would take out the entire stomach that literally makes no sense.” After all, there is no reason to remove a healthy stomach for a gastric bypass.

Whatever the case, OP seems to be fairly determined to get as much information as possible before coming to any more conclusions. Naturally, visiting another bariatric surgeon or speaking to the one who did the surgery would be the best course of action. Still, this whole situation really makes you think: “I feel like a missing stomach would have been noticed long before any of this.”
