Big corporations donโ€™t usually have a reputation for being kind or generous, but Bethesda has just proven to be an exception, at least this time. The official X account for Skyblivion, a fan-made remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, recently shared that the entire modding team received a special gift from the company. In recognition of their years of passion and dedication, Bethesda surprised them with game keys for the newly released Oblivion Remastered, which was shadow-dropped without warning. Itโ€™s a gesture no one expected and one thatโ€™s earned Bethesda some well-deserved praise.

Huge thanks to our friends @BethesdaStudios for their continued support of #Skyblivion!

As massive fans, we're beyond grateful for the generous gift of Oblivion Remastered game keys for our entire modding team! This means so much to us. Thank you for everything, @bethesda. pic.twitter.com/vLsuzhdgkX

While it might seem like an unusually generous gesture, Skyblivion is no ordinary project. Itโ€™s a long-running passion endeavor with a bold goal: to recreate Oblivion within the Skyrim engine. The entire team behind it consists of volunteers whoโ€™ve been pouring their time, energy, and love into the mod since 2012. The project is now slated to release in 2025, the same year as the official Oblivion Remastered. Considering the sheer dedication and longevity of their work, itโ€™s easy to see why Bethesda chose to reward them.

Bethesda has long maintained a strong relationship with the modding community, and this recent gesture only reinforces that bond. The Skyblivion team was clearly moved by the gift, expressing their gratitude by saying, โ€œThis means so much to us. Thank you for everything.โ€ For fans eagerly awaiting the release of Skyblivion, thereโ€™s no need to worry; despite the launch of the official Oblivion Remastered, Bethesda has no intention of shutting down the fan remake.

Many Oblivion fans are thrilled by Bethesdaโ€™s unexpected show of generosity. One Redditor commented, โ€œThatโ€™s honestly awesome of them. Iโ€™m very impressed by this remaster and more than happy to play both Oblivions this year.โ€

However, some users wondered how Bethesda determined which contributors would receive a key, given the large number of volunteers involved in Skyblivionโ€™s development. While there are clearly major contributors, countless others have made smaller but meaningful contributions over the years.

One user offered insight, suggesting Bethesda likely has a solid understanding of the team: โ€œBethesda is very mod-friendly and tends to stay in touch with major fan projects, partly to ensure everything stays within legal boundaries, so it makes sense that theyโ€™d know whoโ€™s who when it comes to the Skyblivion team.โ€

Ultimately, this is a smart PR move on Bethesdaโ€™s part. Gifting a few game keys costs them very little, but the goodwill it generates among modders and the wider fanbase is a valuable trade-off.
