“To The Batman”

As the DC FanDome online event continued to announce more projects in the works, the first official teaser for The Batman film was released. Director Matt Reeves revealed the trailer along with talking about the influences he held onto when making this “noir-driven” story.

The rip and tearing of duct tape echoes throughout the room, coming from a hidden figure in dark green and tape on its face. He’s fixed on a scene, leaving behind a deceased man with “NO MORE LIES” written on his face with red. Jeffrey Wright holds up a riddle amid this maddening tragedy, asking if the Batman might know of something.

As the trailer plays on with “Something in the Way” by Nirvana, we’re treated to snippets of Zoรซ Kravitz breaking into a safe and brawling with the Dark Knight. A chaotic Gotham City is festered with goons and crime, with the Batman being eyed on from many angles: clowns from the streets, suicide attackers in SUVs, and lectures from Alfred, who you can hear in the trailer by a curious Andy Serkis. The central mystery to the film’s narrative, however, is shown quite often in the teaser, but at the same time gives almost no clues as to what we can expect to see from Paul Dano as the Riddler (except for duct tape).

The Batman Riddler

If you are justice, please do not lie; what is the price for your blind eye?”

Also, we get a sneak peek to Robert Pattinson’s combative skills as he beats the living hell out of a street clown. “I’m vengeance,” he whispers, rain falling dramatically before shifting into Bat gear with the enhanced muscle car of the Batmobile. Finally, the logo (which debuted this past Thursday, the 20th) appears, and an ending scene expands on the deep mythos of Batman as he speaks to someone with anxious interest.

The Batman

Although the film’s production was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, shooting is expected to resume this September. The Batman is scheduled for an October 1, 2021 release date.
