Upon its release, the first Conjuring movie was a pleasant surprise to viewers, seemingly reviving the haunted house genre. Its second installment was much of the same, with a few plot differences, but The Conjuring 3 producer Peter Safran stated the next film will be moving away from the formula used in the previous films.
Despite the fact that the sequel actually did better than the first installment, surpassing the worldwide gross of the first film with $320 million (2 million more), Safran is adamant that the next film needs to go in a different direction from haunted houses if it hopes to succeed. In an interview with Cinema Blend, he spoke about how there are still plenty of unknown cases to pull from whom the series is based on, the real-life Ed and Lorraine Warren.
โThere are some cases that maybe arenโt as well known, but they spent a fair bit of time researching and were part of them. Clearly we canโt do another haunted house movie, right? We canโt do another supernatural possession in a house, with a family in peril. Right? So, itโs got to be something different than that, I think.โ
James Wan is speculated to return for The Conjuring 3 as well, though he is currently in the middle of filming Aquaman. Nothing is confirmed in regards to the director’s chair, but Wan certainly has a full plate in regards to upcoming movies, including directing a Conjuring spin-offs titled The Nun (2018).
While itโs not confirmed as to whether The Conjuring 3 has even entered developed yet – or if heโs even attached to the project – Wan has said that the premise would ideally take place in the 80โs and involve werewolves.
