The Dungeons & Dragons TV Series Survived Its Death Save and Dimension Doored Over to Netflix

The scheme paid off

Dungeons & Dragons will make its new small-screen home on Netflix. Deadline reported the show’s new home after an apparent cancellation over at Paramount. The series comes with a seal of quality from producer Shawn Levy and showrunner Drew Crevello. Subtitled “The Forgotten Realms,” this series will hit the streaming service without any connection to the popular 2023 film adaptation. Fans will no doubt be delighted to see their favorite tabletop universe invade the screen again.

Dungeons & Dragons: The Forgotten Realms takes its name from the iconic campaign setting, but it could also hint at its future form on Netflix. The titular location is home to most of the iconic adaptations of D&D. The 2023 film borrowed its backdrop, as do the famed novels by R. A. Salvatore. We could see characters like Drizzt Do’Urden make an appearance in the upcoming series. That fresh take on the material follows the cancellation of Paramount’s follow-up to Honor Among Thieves. This iteration will likely have nothing to do with the film, but it will still share its setting. Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy quickly signed up to produce the project. Oddly enough, showrunner Drew Crevello also worked on the Deadpool franchise as a VP at Fox. This ragtag band of adventurers might be the perfect crew to bring D&D to the small screen.

The cultural impact of Dungeons & Dragons, along with tabletop gaming in general, boggles the mind. It’s part of a larger cultural shift towards mainstreaming nerdy habits. Comic books, video games, and even science fiction novels came before it. Today, the world of actual play podcasts like Critical Role and Dimension 20 sell out massive venues. Interactive storytelling has never been more popular than it is today, but D&D is among its biggest beneficiaries. The 2023 film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was a celebration of the game. It didn’t earn the millions Paramount wanted, leading to the TV series’ unfortunate fate. Now, at the studio that brought it attention through Stranger Things, D&D has another chance at a missed saving throw. The Forgotten Realms could be the launching pad that brings the series into new dimensions of popularity.

We don’t know anything about when Dungeons & Dragons: The Forgotten Realms might come to Netflix. We could be waiting as long as it takes to get a proper session together. No matter how long it takes, this D&D show seems to have everything it needs to become a fan favorite. Netflix will take a chance and roll the dice with Dungeons & Dragons.
