The series centers around Catherine outsmarting her husband’s attempts to usurp her while also trying to win favor with the Russian people. The show was created by Tony McNamara, and Fanning and Hoult served as executive producers.
The series is a satirical look at the Russian monarchy of the late 1700s, focusing on Catherine’s hostile and sometimes comical relationship with her husband. Critics raved about the show’s comedic portrayal of high-status Russia and the costume designs. Fanning and Hoult received praise for their portrayal of the Russian monarchs.
The Great gained multiple award nominations, including several Emmy nominations. Fanning and Hoult received nominations for their performances, and the show won the Emmy for Outstanding Period Costumes.

Fortunately for fans, the show doesn’t end on a nail-biting cliffhanger and does feature a nice end note to leave Catherine on. While there were more stories to tell about Catherine the Great on the show, at least the third season ends with a reasonably satisfying conclusion for Catherine and (some) of the characters on the show.
