The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 wasn’t the only big winner at the box office this past weekend. The finale to The Hunger Games film series earned $51.6 million during the holiday weekend. Ryan Coogler’s Creed and Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur also saw strong debuts. The Good Dinosaur came in 2nd place, with $39 million, while Creed nabbed $30 million.
Worldwide, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 has earned an estimated $440 million. However, the totals are down for the franchise. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 earned $225 million domestically across the same 10-day time span.
These are some of the last major releases of the year until Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so it will be interesting to see how they hold on until Star Wars comes out. Given the critical and public acclaim of Creed, and the positive word of mouth as compared to the other two films that round out the top three, the film may have legs and be able to draw quite the box office sum for a few weeks before the force awakens.
Fox has another flop on their hands, this time in Victor Frankenstein, which finished outside of the top ten in 12th place. The film earned $2.35 million across 2,797 theaters. While it did manage to score an okay $10 million from the other markets it was released it, it looks like the film is dead on arrival.
Finally, several smaller, awards-friendly films enjoyed a relatively successful weekend. Brooklyn, starring Saoirse Ronan and Domhnall Gleeson, earned $3.8 million across 845 theaters, giving it a ninth place finish for the weekend. Spotlight added 299 theaters and earned $4.4 million across 897 theaters, which is an average of $5,011 per theater, giving it an eighth place finish. The Danish Girl debuted in 4 theaters and earned $185,000 while Carol finished slightly ahead of the transgender drama with $203,00 across the same number of theaters.
