The Outliers Are Coming To Uncanny X-Men

Who are the new guys?

Marvel is getting ready to introduce the world of the X-Men to four new mutants known as The Outliers. The recently revealed cover for Gail Simone and David Marquez’ Uncanny X-Men #2 shows off these new mutants. However, the mutants are bathed in light, making any features difficult to see. Also on the cover are Rogue, Gambit, and Wolverine, who surround the incoming newbies. The entire cover appears to pay homage to Gil Kane’s Giant-Size X-Men #1. That issue is noted when introducing the All-New, All-Different X-Men.

After the end of the Krakoan Age, the mutant population on Earth has dwindled slightly. Therefore, The Outliers’ appearance is a big deal as it marks that more mutants on the planet are ready to fight for their rights. However, the teaser for the introduction of this quartet notes that they are “uncontrollable and wild” mutants. So, the Uncanny X-Men may have their hands full with these new guys.

Unfortunately, the powers of The Outliers and their design have yet to be seen. Although, in discussing the Uncanny X-Men series, writer Gail Simone did talk about introducing new mutants. Talking about newcomers, the writer stated that she enjoyed creating new characters and had a fun idea in designing their powers. She took inspiration from the “hidden disabilities” in the real world for their powers. So, expect more internal powers as opposed to Wolverine’s in-your-face claws.

The Outliers In New Orleans

The new Uncanny X-Men series places a team of mutants in The Big Easy. With the three core X-titles placing three teams in different locations, those locations will inspire the stories told. While Simone and Marquez are in New Orleans, Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman’s X-Men are in rural Alaska. Meanwhile, Eve Ewing and Carmen Carnero’s Exceptional X-Men takes readers to Chicago.

The gothic feel of New Orleans will likely come into play when it comes to The Outliers. So expect something pretty grand from these four new mutants.

Uncanny X-Men #2 is expected this September.
