Daryl is a long way from home in AMC’s new trailer for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. Everyone’s favorite motorcycle-riding bad boy has found himself in France. The franchise continues to expand its empire with yet another spin-off, and fans couldn’t be happier. Daryl didn’t appear in the comic and was written specifically for the show, which was obviously the right decision given his overwhelming popularity. The closer the show’s release date grows, the more fans clamor for news of Daryl’s adventures. What excitement could’ve drawn him across the ocean?

The trailer opens with Daryl washing up on a desolate beach, seemingly the survivor of a shipwreck. We’re then treated to shots of nuns in a post-apocalyptic convent. One of the nuns asks how Daryl came to be in France. His reply? “A bunch of bad decisions.” What follows is a montage of Daryl punching people, then an explosion at some kind of facility filled with storage containers. It seems Daryl’s life has been anything but quiet since leaving the Commonwealth in TWD. While at the nunnery, Daryl introduces himself to a young man with dark hair: Laurent. The nun tells Daryl that he is a messenger tasked with the job of delivering Laurent. Why? “To lead the revival of humanity,” according to the nun.

That’s no small task, but the nuns appear equipped for the job. An arsenal of weapons fills the convent’s armory. Daryl’s mission won’t be easy, however. An unknown woman instructs a man with a tattooed face to find and kill Daryl. Our crossbow-wielding hero has survived everything else TWD has thrown at him. Still, in a series known for killing off major characters, nothing is certain. The snippets that follow give little away—Daryl hands Laurent a knife, faces off against walkers and the men hunting him, and even fires an antique flintlock. It seems this change in locale could mean big things for the character.

What Will Become of Daryl?

Like most good trailers, this one leaves viewers with plenty of questions. What brought Daryl to align himself with the nuns? Did the convent arise before the end of the world or after? What caused the mysterious militia to want to kill Daryl? Most importantly, why is Laurent so important? Daryl carved out an incredible legacy on TWD. Judging by this trailer, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will further cement the character’s importance to the franchise’s universe. He’s ready to take on France, one crossbow bolt at a time, and AMC has the makings for another hit.
