While cats may be known for their acrobatic agility, strong of sense of smell, and too-cool-for-school elegance, it’s safe to say that they’re not particularly famous for their musical skills. Sure, there’s that Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats, which went on to become a box office flop back in 2019, which blends cats, societal ostracism, and music in a smart way. But, for the most part, felines and melodies are typically not mutually exclusive. But, wait! What if I told you that some mogs may have a knack at playing the theremin? Take, for example, these Philadelphia cats, who showed off their musical talents recently as they “played” the electronic musical instrument. Now I have your attention.

Described in Carolclevelandsings’ Instagram post as an “experimental composition,” the 18-second clip showcases two felines — Rags and Harpo — producing music by way of freely interacting with a theremin. See, for those unaware, the theremin generates electromagnetic fields around two antennas, so any vertical or horizontal movements near these fields can produce a pitch and melody.

Within the footage, we get to see snippets of Rags and Harpo interacting with the theremin, thus creating their own musical soundscapes. In the opening moments, Rags can be seen playfully moving its paw near one of the theremin’s antennas, and later on, Rags can be witnessed rubbing its nose on another receiver. This helps to compose an eerie, almost old-school sci-fi tune that feels and sounds quite atmospheric.

Due to the wholesome nature of the clip, social media users couldn’t resist chiming in with their thoughts on the cute video. Over on Instagram, one user declared, “This had me LOLing uncontrollably! I needed this!!! ❤️❤️❤️” while another chipped in with, “When is their record deal and a world tour.” Over on Reddit, however, a cat owner expressed, “I’ve got a theremin. I’ve got cats. And now it looks mad though I have plans for the evening. Thank you for the inspiration. [sic]”
