Tish Cyrus might be thriving in her new romance with Dominic Purcell. However, she can’t help but reflect on the end of her former marriage. The famous matriarch recently got candid about how her divorce from ex-husband Billy Ray Cyrus almost tore apart their family.
Tish opened up during an appearance on the Sibling Revelry with Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson podcast. She confessed that getting a divorce was something she fought so hard against for the longest time. The doting mom tried to fight for it, especially since she came from a home with parents who stayed together.
“I never wanted to be divorced…I wanted to make it work, probably for a little too long, like, for my own mental health. There became a point that, like, I didn’t have a choice.”
After 28 years of marriage and five kids, Tish and Billy Ray called it quits. She filed for divorce in April 2022. During their union, the pair welcomed daughters Miley, Noah and son Braison. The country singer also adopted Tish’s two children — daughter Brandi and son Trace — from her first marriage. Despite their kids being adults during the divorce, the talent manager confessed it was “tough” on them. She recalled an incident involving her son Trace, saying, “He was bummed. He was like, ‘I wish my mom and dad would never get… I wish that wouldn’t have happened.’”
Trace, however, wasn’t the only child to have a problem. According to daughter Brandii, who joined her mother on the podcast, Tish and Billy tried to work on their marriage for the youngest child, Noah. She recalled their previous unsuccessful attempts at divorcing.
“In the prior filings, like, especially Noah, was so young, and that was definitely a big thing. My mom really wanted the family to stay together for Noah.”

Following the divorce, Noah and Tish went through a rough patch. The 24-year-old was absent from her mother’s wedding to Purcell in August 2023. At the time, sources claimed a love triangle was at play, with claims the matriarch stole the Prison Break actor from her daughter. However, Brandi’s new revelation speaks to the July singer choosing her father’s side in the divorce. It didn’t help that The Blast reports that Noah stepped out in a Billy Ray t-shirt on the day of her mom’s wedding.
Luckily, the estranged mother-duo ended their rift in July 2024, after almost a year, with an affectionate public sighting. With the family bond slowly being restored, Tish said of her divorce, “I think that we did it really well. I think I did really well, and I do think that I just wanted it to be the easiest as possible for everyone involved.”
