Tom Cruise has added another accolade to his storied career, but this time it has nothing to do with acting. Earlier this week, the actor received the U.S. Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the Navy Secretary. A ceremony held at Longcross Studios in the UK recognized Cruise’s contributions to promoting the Navy and Marine Corps through his work in film, notably the “Top Gun” franchise.

The Navy’s statement highlighted Cruise’s efforts to showcase the dedication and sacrifices of Navy personnel, which has inspired countless individuals to consider military service. According to Huffpost, Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro, who presented the award, remarked, “Tom Cruise’s decades of naval advocacy through cinema have inspired generations to serve.”

Cruise, now 62, expressed pride in the recognition, stating, “It’s an honor to be part of a legacy that celebrates the men and women who serve our nation. This award also acknowledges the incredible teams I’ve worked with, who bring our stories to life.”

The Top Gun films, starting with the 1986 blockbuster, have had a profound cultural impact. The original film led to a major uptick in Navy pilot recruitment, with recruitment tables reportedly set up in theaters to capitalize on the movie’s popularity. The sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, brought renewed enthusiasm for naval aviation, grossing over $1.4 billion globally and earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.

To ensure realism in Top Gun: Maverick, filmmakers collaborated closely with the Navy. High-tech IMAX cameras were mounted inside F-18 cockpits flown by actual Navy pilots. Retired Navy pilot Frank “Walleye” Weisser even served as Cruise’s stunt double for many of the film’s aerial scenes. This attention to detail not only entertained audiences but also reinforced the Navy’s image as a force of precision and excellence.

While the Top Gun series has been instrumental in shaping Cruise’s connection with the Navy, other movies like A Few Good Men and Born on the Fourth of July showcased the complexities of military life, earning him critical acclaim. In 2020, the Navy named Cruise an honorary naval aviator, solidifying his status as a cultural ambassador for the armed forces.
