After just two months since its initial premiere on Amazon Prime Video, Utopia has come to an official close. As confirmed by Variety, the eight-episode series will not see a second season.

A Dystopian Turn for Utopia

The decision to cancel the show comes after a slow train of reception from fans and critics. According to its IMDb page, the show’s popularity statistic is on a red decline; Metacritic reported a 56 Metascore based on 19 reviews; and on Rotten Tomatoes, Utopia holds a 51% approval rating based on 45 reviews, with the critical consensus reading:

Utopia‘s cast and mystery at times transcend its overtly cynical and overly violent tendencies, but even those willing to look past the torture may find the whole thing too timely – in a bad way.”

Utopia follows a group of comic book enthusiasts who meet and bond online. Their shared interest leads them to the possession of a strange comic. They are soon made a target by an underground organization, with the dangers from the comic book coming into their world. The show was a co-production between Amazon Studios, Kudos, and Endemol Shine North America.

Utopia Rainn and Ashleigh

Sharp Objects, Dark Places, and Gone Girl writer Gillian Flynn created and wrote the series. Utopia‘s main cast included John Cusack, Sasha Lane, Rainn Wilson, Ashleigh LaThrop, Dan Byrd, Jessica Rothe, Cory Michael Smith, and Desmin Borges. It’s a U.S. adaptation from the British black comedy-conspiracy series of the same name by Dennis Kelly.

Amazon will also be saying goodbye to Bosh and Goliath next year in 2021. Hunters, The Boys, Carnival Row, and Jack Ryan are all set to return. Upcoming new shows that have been ordered are also on-track for release, including A League of Their Own, The Peripheral, and The Lord of the Rings. Have you seen any of Utopia? What are your thoughts on its cancelation? Let me know what you think in the comments!
