Right now, ICE has been making several arrests all over the country. Donald Trump’s strict policy is putting immigrants in danger of being deported. It’s not just that, but ICE has started wearing normal clothes to blend in with people. They are also coming up with new methods to check homes and find immigrants. A Virginia lawyer had first-hand experience with ICE’s new techniques as they went to the house of a client of his. He quickly confronted them, and they backed down after a conversation ensued.
In the video, the Virginia lawyer is parked in front of his client’s house, and he steps out to talk to the ICE agents in front of the house. He tells them, “It’s too early for this,” as he heads toward him. The Virginia lawyer has already identified them as ICE agents. One of the agents asks him who he is, to which he responds by saying that he is the family lawyer. One of the agents then says that they are Homeland Security Investigations. What made matters worse is that the agent profiled the Virginia lawyer’s assistant as the immigrant woman they were looking for just because she looked Latina. “That’s not her,” the lawyer says.
What Happens Next?
The ICE agents claim that they are just there to do a welfare check on her. It becomes clear that this is a pretext. The lawyer then says that his client’s case is closed by the judge and that they are just waiting for the priority date for her green card. They don’t budge as the same agent tells the Virginia lawyer that they still need to talk to her. The lawyer, however, says that he can set a date at his office. The agent then says that they need to talk to her sponsor, which makes the Virginia lawyer point out how they changed their words. Instead of wanting to talk to the client, they are now saying they want to talk to her sponsor.
The Virginia lawyer still insists that he will allow them to see her only in his office. He also says that he is trying to prevent the ICE agents from coming back to the neighborhood and that what they are doing hasn’t happened before, so it must be a new policy; he perhaps meant their claim to be doing a welfare check on a minor. In another video, he said that they wanted to do a welfare check on a minor who is no longer a minor. He wrote in the caption of the first video:
“ice showing up 5 deep and armed at one of my clients house claiming to be doing a welfare check on a minor waiting for a green card. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has ordered the arrest of minors who entered the United States unaccompanied.”
People Reacting to the Virginia Lawyer’s Video
People in the comments were rightly outraged at what went down. One asked in disbelief: “5 armed ICE agents for a minor?!?!!?.” Another person also found it strange that they claimed to be doing a welfare check. “Since when do ice agents do welfare checks?” they wrote. One TikTok user pointed out the profiling that happened to the Virginia lawyer’s assistant. “dude just pointed at a random latina looking woman and said ‘we need to talk to her’ that’s some insane profiling,” they said. Another noticed the same thing as they wrote, “The way they profiled your partner!!”
Some people were also upset by the fact that the agent leading the conversation was a black man. “Black ice agents are ridiculous to me,” one person wrote. Another replied saying, “Using a person of color to kidnap a person of color is insane work.” One woman was outraged by the entire interaction:
“This is so disturbing! These ‘agents’ dress in street clothes to bait people into opening their doors. Since when do ICE agents not need to be in uniform? I’m beginning to think Trump just hired a bunch of extremists to carry out his agenda.”
It’s a good thing that the Virginia lawyer stood his ground and kept defending his client in a collected manner. Unfortunately, not many immigrants are lucky enough to have a lawyer to defend them.
