Voice actor Nolan North made a small cameo in the newly released video-game-to-film-adaptation of ‘Uncharted.’ As Tom Holland brings the main character Nathan Drake to life for the big screen, Nolan North is the person who truly made the character become who he is today. North has voice acted and performed motion capture movements for the iconic treasure hunter Nathan Drake in PlayStation’s ‘Uncharted’ videogame for the last ten years.
While talks of an ‘Uncharted’ film had been around for so long, many true fans of the Sony game wanted the voice and performer of Nathan Drake in the videogames to be cast as Drake in the motion picture. Even though fans pleaded for him to play Drake, Nolan North told Variety he only has one answer,
“People think, ‘It should’ve been you.’ No, it shouldn’t. I’m 51,”
A valid response from Nolan North. As ‘Uncharted’ is an action-adventure film jam-packed with stunts, it’s understandable why North would give up the possibility of starring as Nathan Drake on the big screen to a younger, more agile star who fits the look as well and is less likely to get injured easily. Tom Holland takes the starring role of Nathan Drake in the ‘Uncharted’ film. This is Holland’s first significant motion picture role besides his success as our current friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Nolan North’s brief cameo in ‘Uncharted’ happens in a scene inspired by an action set piece in “Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception”. This comes as Drake(Holland) and Chloe Frazer (Sophia Ali) survive a massive drop after falling out of a cargo plane up above thousands of feet in the sky. After deploying a parachute and floating down to the water, the two eventually wind up at a beach town where North’s familiar voice greets them. “Whoa, what the hell happened to you two?” North says as he lounges in a beach chair. Holland’s Drake responds, “Fell out of a car then fell out of a plane,”… North’s cameo character responds, “Huh. You know, something like that happened to me once,” North says knowingly. As Drake and Chloe walk away, North calls out to say, “Good luck!” That ends the cameo. It was perfectly fit, not pushed awkwardly, and catered to some fan service by bringing Nolan North’s Nathan Drake voice that only fans of the video game would know.
