Destiny 2 launched back in 2017, and fans have been hoping that Destiny 3 would be landing in 2020, but that may not be the case. The 2020 launch speculations come from all kinds of sources, from flimsy hopes like the fact Destiny 2 launched three years after Destiny 1, and 2020 would be three years since Destiny 2 launched. But also heavy hitters like research firm Cowen and Company, who told investors 2020 was likely to be the launch window.

Speaking to PCGamesN, when asked about how long Bungie intends to stick with Destiny 2, Bungie’s Comms Director David Deej Drague said:

“I don’t have any good announcements to make about the next bold moves we’ll make in the franchise. Right now our commitment and our attention is to make the seasons that will unfold over the course of the next year interesting and sustain a perennial story arc that will keep players engaged.”

He continues:

“I understand the question you’re asking and it’s certainly an interesting one, and we’ll have a lot of cool stuff to say on that later, but I’m afraid that moment will have to wait a little bit longer.”

Destiny 3

Historically, Destiny games have had rough launches, Destiny 1 only really took off after the Taken King DLC, and Destiny 2 only really reeled in and retained newcomers after the launch of Forsaken.

There is potential that Destiny 3 was meant to launch in 2020, but had to be put back. This would not be the first time that Bungie had to change a release window, Destiny 2 expansion Shadowkeep was pushed back, and ended up launching in October 2019! Sixteen months before launch, Destiny 2 had a reboot and swapped out their director.

Never the less, Destiny has captured the love of many fans and has consistently generated incredibly favorable reviews, so waiting a little longer should be ok.
