What Does Leveling Up Do in Fallout Shelter? Explained

Be a good Overseer. Keep your residents safe.

No matter what you play in theย Falloutย universe, you understand the importance of stats, leveling, or weapons.ย Fallout Shelterย does things a little differently, though.ย You’ll noticeย shortly after filling up yourย budding Vault with Dwellersย that their levels will steadily increase over time.ย But what exactly does leveling up do for Vault Dwellers inย Fallout Shelter?ย Well, it does less than you think,ย andย it’sย honestlyย a bit trickier than it looks.

Stats are key in Fallout Shelter when it comes to assigning and using Dwellers. Indicated as “Special,” these stats are surprisingly not impacted when you level them up. On the other hand, one stat can affect the leveling process in Fallout Shelter.

Before we get into that,ย know, though,ย that you can easily gain XP by warding off incidents (e.g. fire, bugs, raiders) or goingย outย to the Wastelands and fighting things off there.ย XP also raises naturally as long as Dwellers are working in one of the rooms.

Now, when you level up a Dweller, the only thing you will notice a change in is their HP. Leveling up is intended to make Dwellers more resilient, giving them a better chance to survive various encounters whether in the Vault or out in the Wastelands. And a good Overseer wants their people to survive, right? But there’s also nothing wrong with waiting for the right moment to use the leveling feature in Fallout Shelter.

Although leveling doesn’t change your Dweller stats, the Endurance stat will impact how well the leveling process goes in Fallout Shelter. When you level up a Dweller, their HP improves based on their Endurance level. This includes any outfits they wear to boost the stat. So, if a Dweller already has low Endurance, their HP won’t improve by that much.

If you want to make the most of leveling up your people inย Fallout Shelter, ensureย that theyย have solid Endurance first. The best way to do this is to increase the number of Dwellers you have until you can unlock training areas like the Weight Room to raise stats.

With that in mind, you may have to accept that your first few Dwellers are less likely to have high HP compared to the ones you bring in later. But it never hurts to level them as more HP, no matter how small the gain, is always better whenever something happens inside the Vaults.

Fallout Shelter is free-to-play for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and mobile devices.
