The release of a teaser for a fanmade Attack on Titan game has sparked new interest in that franchise‘s video game potential. Anime and manga adaptations sometimes struggle to connect with fans, but that doesn’t appear to be the case here. A recent post by Swammy, the owner and lead developer of BlackBox Studios, has AoT fans talking for good reason. The franchise is known for its breathtaking battles against gigantic, cannibalistic titans, and this game captures the same frantic energy that the anime is known for. Featuring first and third-person gameplay, aerial acrobatics, and even some impressive explosions, this brief glimpse is enough reason to say this insane fanmade Attack on Titan game needs a publisher, ASAP.

The Game Devouring the Attack on Titan Competition

Swammy’s game shows off a number of must-have features for any true Attack on Titan title. In it, the player navigates around a city and forest using Omni-Directional Mobility Gear. It’s the same grapple equipment that characters use in the show, and this project seems to do it right. How mobility would be handled has always been one of the big questions whenever potential AoT games are discussed. The movement and visceral impact of battles add so much to the tension of the show that you would have to nail them in any game that wanted to do justice to the original. Even from the brief clip available, the game seems to do just that. AoT has had crossovers with Fortnite and Dead by Daylight, but it deserves more games of its own.

In addition to jetting around using the Omni Gear, we also see the player attacking two titans. One is a smaller, generic titan, who catches the character and devours them. Unsurprisingly, it results in an instant death. More impressively, the player takes on the Colossal Titan, the franchise’s poster child. As titles like God of War and Shadow of the Colossus have taught us, battles against massive enemies can make for fantastic set piece moments. Again, that’s exactly the kind of thing you’d have to nail for an Attack on Titan game to be good. Everything we’ve seen is extremely promising. BlackBox Studios seems up to the task of development, and it deserves a publisher to help put its work into players’ hands.
