DC has struggled to catch up withย Marvel in the realm of cinema. Christopher Nolan’sย Batman trilogy was positively received, but every attempt to bring a cohesive cinematic universe together has dropped the ball. Superman has been through the ringer, andย Suicide Squad was generally disliked, even if it had some strong ideas. Next up to the plate isย Wonder Woman, which recently screened for critics. It sounds like Gal Gadot’s superhero film might break the curse, as a critical opinion on Twitter has been overwhelmingly positive for the film.

This is obviously just a small sample size, but it is tough to find people who have negative things to say aboutย Wonder Woman. This is good news for DC; their DCEU films have made plenty of money, but they seemed to be playing second fiddle to a lot ofย Marvel’s superhero films in terms of quality and critical reception.
Wonder Woman being a critical and commercial successย could also be an important milestone considering this is a movie about a *gasp* female superhero that is also directed by a woman. Marvel has dropped the ball with their marketing of Black Widow in their films, and only recently committed to a solo movie of the Russian super spy. If the early reactions prove correct,ย Wonder Woman might be the proof that female superhero films can hang with the boys.
Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, and David Thewlis. It is directed by Patty Jenkins and releases on June 2. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
