Apocalypse is on the hunt for a successor in new Marvel series X-Men: Heir of Apocalypse. The four-issue series comes from writer Steve Foxe and artist Netho Diaz. It finds the titular villain gathering 12 mutants for an epic tournament to see who is worthy to be their heir. Those 12 mutants include Armageddon Girl, Cable, Cypher, Emma Frost, Exodus, Forge, Gorgon, Mirage, Mister Sinister, Penance, Rictor, and Laura Kinney. The miniseries will take place just before the official relaunch of the X-Men after the current end of the Krakoan Age.

Apocalypse began as En Sabah Nur, an ancient evil destined to become the mutant supremacist we all know and love. Much of Apocalypse’s mythos is centered around his motto of “only the strong survive”. This has led the mutant to enslave and exterminate the mutants he deems too weak to live. Most notably, Apocalypse surrounds himself with his four Horsemen: Famine, Pestilence, War, and Death.

However, his reign of terror and world domination seemingly ended in the Krakoan Age. Instead, Apocalypse joined the mutants on the Quiet Council to guide their people to a positive future. Now that that Age is over, it seems the mutant is back to his old ways and needs an heir to lend a hand.

According to Marvel, this new series focuses on Apocalypse who has constantly tested mutants to ensure only the strong would survive. Now, Apocalypse is taking the throne on Arakko (formerly Mars) and needs to ensure Earth is in capable hands during his absence. So, the Darwinist mutant has hand-picked 12 heroic and villainous mutants to see who will come out on top. After all, only one can be the true heir of Apocalypse!

Writer Steve Foxe is excited to delve further into the legacy of Apocalypse. Since his debut in 1986, the giant mutant has played a significant role in many of the mutant-focused stories for Marvel. Recently, with the Krakoan Age, Apocalypse has revealed new facets of himself. So, Foxe feels both the excitement and pressure that comes with tackling any part of this looming presence in X-Men lore. Especially as X-Men: Heir Of Apocalypse reveals even more about the legacy of this mutant and paves a new course.
