Xbox is aware of the toxic environment in the gaming communities, and now itโ€™s releasing a new feature, the strike system, against toxic players. The consoleโ€™s social base, Xbox Live, is enhancing the algorithm for catching and suspending accounts, and now this strike system will be used to judge ill-willed users. The new system adds to the userโ€™s account penalty points for every act violating the community guidelines. Every such move is worth a different strike point value, and the users reaching 8 points are getting banned for a year. There are less-harsh punishments for minor faults, but everybodyโ€™s getting what they deserve with this new venture.

The Xbox team shared a table showing which acts result in how many strike points and how the punished user can eliminate said points. The highest strike point could be 8, but getting punished before reaching that is possible. Even 1 strike point gets you banned for a day, and the points don’t disappear for six months. Check out this graphic for a closer look:

Before the strike system was implemented, the Xbox moderators reviewed the reports themselves and decided on the user penalties. The new system seems stricter, so you better be careful about what you say in the online sessions. A single profanity could cause you to get banned from online games for 24 hours, and it could get extended to a year if you continue your violations. According to the same blog post data, one percent of Xbox users were punished with temporary bans in 2022. Only 1/3 of them proceeded to enact further violations and were punished with heavier penalties.

Some rare studios already have their own solutions against toxic players. However, a penalty system directly run by Xbox will probably prove more effective. Xbox will also release the results in further months, so let’s wait and see how the system affects online play.
